Brainstorming Ground Rules

Brainstorming Ground Rules

Solutions and ideas that solve problems are the results of brainstorming. The goal of a brainstorming session is to get the best ideas possible. However, before you begin any brainstorming session you need to set ground rules. Brainstorming ground rules are not set in stone and made so tight there is no room to be creative, but are merely set as a guideline and fit in as a code of conduct for good brainstorming sessions. The rules are based on person-to-person interaction. When the brainstorming ground rules are broken, the group is interrupted.

The only way to have brainstorming ground rules that have meaning is to have the group make their own. Have a brainstorming session to create brainstorming ground rules. It is good practice to have the opportunity for an effective brainstorming session that solves problems. Creating these types of rules will make the team responsible for their actions. The leader should watch over the group to make sure they establish ground rules that make sense. When the rules are established, look over them and make sure all of the team agrees on the rules. Emphasize that all brainstorming sessions will be conducted according to the posted rules, where all participants can see them.

Here is an example of brainstorming ground rules when conducting brainstorming sessions:

? There is no such thing as a dumb idea. Brainstorming sessions are supposed to be fun. Make sure the entire group is involved.

? Do not pass judgment on ideas. All ideas are acceptable no matter how crazy they may sound.

? When an idea is offered build on that idea. Ideas can act like triggers to the group and prompt other members to build on other ideas. This makes the idea improved.

? It is all about quantity not quality. The goal is to have the most creative and unique ideas.

? The leader stops and starts all brainstorming sessions

? The leader asks each participant for ideas. The group should not give ideas all at the same time. The results would be chaos.

? The leader writes all ideas on a board.

? One person takes notes of the brainstorming session for an overview of the session. All participants should receive a written overview of each brainstorming session.

? Brainstorming sessions will only last for 30 to 40 minutes. If at that point, the problem is not resolved plan for another brainstorming session in the future.

? Save evaluation of all ideas for another meeting. Do not stop the flow of ideas to evaluate an idea.

Brainstorming groups can establish any type of ground rules they want, within reason. The leader needs to ensure the group focuses on the diversity of the individuals in the group. There will be various backgrounds and job experiences that the group should consider when establishing brainstorming ground rules. The job of the leader is to monitor the creation of the brainstorming ground rules. Every participant of a group needs to follow the brainstorming ground rules to the letter.
